Okay, I'll admit it... I am huge.Today was my growth ultrasound, ordered after my visit to the doctor last week. She didn't say how much bigger I was measuring, but she did say I was measuring big and wanted me to have an ultrasound just to see.
Well, she was right. I'm 36 weeks and 5 days along today, and the baby is measuring as 38 weeks and 3 days--not quite two weeks ahead. They didn't change my due date or say anything about whether or not this could cause me to deliver earlier. She said the only way to know if I'll deliver earlier is to keep checking my "progress" (dilation, effacement, how high the baby is...) which they didn't do today. She did tell me that according to the little measuring tape they use, I was measuring at 39 weeks last week... no wonder she was so hurried to get this ultrasound done!
According to the ultrasound technician, the baby weighs about 7 1/2 pounds right now. While I want him to keep gaining weight if he has to, I'd like him to slow it down a bit!! Sheesh lil' Cooligan, what has your mom been feeding you, anyway?? (insert sheepish grin here...).
Here's what I'm thinking now:
1. The Cooligan is going to have to wear all of his newborn sized clothing right away. Most of it is the Carter's brand, which says that the NB size fits babys who weigh 5-8 pounds. Ha! If he comes out as a 9+ pound baby, I guess those few ultra-cute but NB sized outfits are pretty useless.
2. If my mom, who is tiny, could squeeze out my massive Brother, I can do this.
3. The painful part of labor is the process of dilation, right? So the pushing part where the baby's weight and size really matters should be a welcome thing at that point... I'll be almost done. (If any of you "already did this" moms dare to take away this little piece of denial right now... it won't be good!) Logic and reality are NOT welcome here at the moment!
4. Brian is not going anywhere, with the possible exception of Scott's bachelor party. If there is even a chance that this child is going to come early, he needs to be on call and within a short distance at all times. I can't possibly do this without Brian!
5. How was this midwife the first person to catch this discrepancy? I've been measured all along, and I've even asked consistently through the pregnancy if I'm still measuring ahead. Stupid doctors!!
6. Oh my gosh, the nosy strangers have been right all along--- I AM huge!!

I'm glad that everything checked out well today. I wouldn't worry about the size estimate of the baby, they can be very wrong on their weight predictions. That being said, if you have any size Newborn stuff with the tags still on it, I would return it for 0-3, just so the baby can get more wears out of the clothing.
As for pushing him out, you will have appropriate pain medication if you want it, and that should at least take the edge off the pain. I don't really remember feeling any pain during the pushing (except for the "ring of fire," a phenomenon I had been unaware of prior to delivery!) -- just mainly excitement that we were so close to meeting our boys.
yes, the pushing part wasn't painful for me either.....well, except the very end, "the ring of fire" as erin stated. but it is quick and very welcome. just remember to PUSH like you are pushing out the biggest crap of your life.....i really underestimated how hard to push, you really have to give it your all! you can do it!
I can't say if pushing is painful I was heavily drugged.. I did go "Oh THAT's the ring of fire!" Got it, but it was over as soon as it started so no big deal, and that means you are just about done so who the heck cares at that point. The drs told me Colin would be small, but they didn't do an ultrasound. I hope he comes next week when I'm home!!
